Advani urges government to seek vote of confidence

A strange situation persists at the center where the partners are engaged in mutual warfare thanks to the mounting animosity over the Indo-US nuclear deal. While the Left is adamant to stop the government tooth and nails from moving ahead to the completion of the deal, the Congress is still hopeful to survive and this time with the support of the Samjwadi Party (SP). To the consideration of LK Advani, the much hyped “iron man” and the Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP in the impending elections, there was no credibility left with the government and for that it was necessary for the current UPA government to seek vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha.

However, what has been most striking is the renewed friendship between Congress and SP over the deal, who were bitterest enemies of each other even a few weeks back. Well, there is no doubt that the Congress did give a masterstroke by bringing SP within its fold and alienating the Left in all purposes. This indicates that any hasty decision on the part of the Left would lessen its preeminence in the national politics since its categorical declaration of snapping ties with the UPA, if Government moves ahead with the Indo-US nuclear deal, has raised voices of dissent in several quarters.

Even its defiant stand of withdrawing 59 members, if necessary, would hardly matter if the SP comes behind the government with all its might. Nevertheless how far this resurgent friendship would go depends on a lot of ifs and buts.
